A study in white- with the many clinical objects in my hospital room where I will be for 10 days.  Looking closely at Titanium, zinc, and egg shell whites in the linens, tissues, and tubes.  Looked up artists who adore white, Monet, Courbet, Kelly and Ryman and Tuttle, among others.  Taking the medical devices and surroundings of a room to be seen in new ways and connect these to a life beyond the walls and in my imagination helps me to be resilient at a time when there is little control over your life.

Day 1,132

August 12, 2014 Bonnie Pitman

Today is the Letter L—lemons, limes, lights, lime sorbet. Leafs of herbs and orchids, linens and lavender and an Annette Lawrence drawing. It is a away to gain a new perspectives on familiar things that surround us and to see in new ways. I made lemon and lime-aid after photos of the full fruits—loved its tangy taste and memories of growing lemons and limes in Florida at my parents home.

Day 1,122

August 2, 2014 Bonnie Pitman

August is an exploration of my home through the alphabet. Today is the letter B—found ten objects including blue berries, bears, koa bowls, glass Sognia Blumdahl bowls and too many black and blue clothes! Look around you and ask others to help you with the alphabet soup of daily life—the last half of the alphabet is hard (especially Z!)—and ideas are welcome.

Day 1,121

August 1, 2014 Bonnie Pitman

The alphabet in my home—looking in new ways at the things that surround us everyday: apples, art books (I have too many!), and aqua mosaics in the table, avocadoice cream from Two Sisters. The memories that each of these bring to me help recall the past—where I first tasted an apple or avocado, when I fell in love with art, and when I bought a lotus bowl and who has shared meals with me.

Day 1,097

WhaleWatching.jpg

Beginning year 4 of my Something New Practice with a new experience—whale watching off the Monterey coast. My dear friend Kathy and her sister Margot joined me for the four-hour tour, where we saw humpback whales and Risso’s dolphins leaping and splashing in the ocean almost like a performance. One of my favorite places to be is on the water feeling the motion of life in the waves—and this new experience brought the life to the surface and to the cheers of all on boat. I have been whale watching off the coasts of New Zealand, Hawaii, Cape Cod and Washington state but never in California!

Leda enjoys taste tests too.

Leda enjoys taste tests too.

There are quiet days—when it is too hard to go outside and I do not feel great—today was one. So I did a taste test of dark chocolate almonds—Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Godiva, and Safeway. It was an afternoon delight! Learning to taste the difference in the chocolates is very subtle as well as the freshness of the almonds. In life, examining the subtle things can lead to new discoveries.

So many beautiful almonds!

Day 941

February 2, 2013 Bonnie Pitman

New people come into my life and are always a celebration, especially when I learn from them. Kyle is a tea master at The Cultured Cup where I have purchased many of my teas. He is a leading expert in this field and speaks to the healing properties of tea. Green and black teas are especially helpful in healing the body if you drink 4 to 6 cups. Drinking tea is not a casual act—you must select the right tea leafs, bring the water to the proper temperature, steep the tea the correct amount of time and slowly savor each sip. Through Kyle I have learned the variation of Black, Green and White teas, as well as Rooibos and Herb teas, as each has its own healing properties.
